Sustainable Scenic Painting

Over the last few years there has been a shift in the entertainment industry and a move towards greener practices. Sustainable materials and recycling can make a difference.

I began using more eco-friendly products while working on season one of Ted Lasso in 2019, we were encouraged by the Production Designer Paul Cripps to buy only sustainably made and/or water based paints and materials. As Head Painter, over three seasons of the show, I was given the opportunity to use, test and research many new products and found that the eco alternatives really do measure up.

Not only was that way of working better for the environment it was also nicer for the construction painters, as almost 100% of the products used were water based with low VOCs and no harsh chemicals.

Greener Scenics

Since my time on Ted Lasso I have made a conscious effort to implement greener practices into all of my projects. By using environmentally friendly materials, recycling resources, and trying to reduce waste, I aim to produce the same excellent quality of work while minimising the impact on the planet.

I started the Instagram account @greenerscenics as a place to talk about sustainable options within the industry. Trying to work in a more eco friendly way is something I really care about and through the account I share information about products, materials and new innovations, as well as doing reviews and testing for companies like Flints, Graphenstone Paints and Mylands Paints.

What is eco paint?

Eco paints are better for the environment and our health, they are usually made from a base material such as chalk or clay and also may contain natural raw ingredients. Regular paint can be made up from plastics, solvents and chemicals - paint is one of the largest sources of microplastics in water today.

The eco paint companies also focus on the sustainability of their production, whether that means trying to make their factories carbon neutral, selling their products in recyclable packaging or working to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation.
